STAVROS NIARCHOS AND THE SNF

Niarchos, the Foundation and Laconia

Stavros Niarchos (1909–1996) was born in Athens to a family with roots in the Laconian village of Vamvakou (SNF). SNF calls Laconia “the ancestral homeland of our founder”.

In Laconia (SNF Laconia Initiative)

  • Archaeological Museum of Sparta. On 6 July 2020 SNF and the Greek state signed a $5,097,000 grant to expand and upgrade the museum, with an underground extension and a renovated garden, designed by Renzo Piano Building Workshop.
  • House of the Mosaics (“House of Europa”). A $347,665 grant to conserve and show two Roman mosaics, The Abduction of Europa and Orpheus with the Animals; opened to the public in May 2021. Led by Ioannis Varvitsiotis and the Friends of the Mosaics of Sparta.
  • Vamvakou Revival. Bringing new life to the Parnon village of Niarchos’s family.
  • School of Byzantine Music and Hagiography. Built and fitted out with the Holy Metropolis of Monemvasia and Sparta (completion expected 2025 per SNF).
  • New General Hospital of Sparta. Designed by RPBW under SNF’s Global Health Initiative, replacing a building in use since 1953.

Elsewhere in Greece

SNF’s best-known Greek project is the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center in Athens, home to the National Library and the Greek National Opera.

TO BE VERIFIEDThe SNF Cultural Center details and current status of each Laconia project (completion of the museum works, the hospital and the school) should be checked on snf.org before publication.
